Around Thanksgiving, Michelle and I visited Belgium. Why Belgium, you ask? Why not? We spent most of our time in Brussels with a day trip to Bruges. Don't want to read my notes? Skip straight to the pictures.
There are just a few words you need to know about Belgium:
We were there 4 days, which I see as an ideal length of time to be in the country. Some highlights and recommendations:
Bruge is the definition of quaint, as these pictures show:
Historic buildings lining the Markt, the main square of Bruges
Shots along the canals of Bruges. They make a great walking tour. Boat tours are also available.
Brussels has its share of photo-worthy scenery as well, much of it centered around the Grand Place, or old town square.
Sample of the ornate buildings lining Grand Place
The stunning Hotel de Ville. Not an actual functional hotel, but an old 15th century building. One of the few buildings in the area to survive the late 17th century French bombardment of the city. The Hotel Amigo is directly behind this building. This building is directly next to the ones in the previous photo on Grand Place.
The touristy but scenic Rue des Bouchers, lined with restaurants preparing for the evening crowds.
Buildings lining a park, I believe the Place du Petit Sablon on the Rue de Regence.
Overlooking the city from a plaza near the national assembly building. The spire of the Hotel de Ville rises in the background. It made an excellent landmark for our hotel, I can tell you that.
Michelle and I sampling some beers at the famous bar at the Theatre Royal
de Toone.
Michelle standing next to the rolling death trap more commonly referred
to in Europe as the "Smart" car.
Me standing on an overlook next to the Palais de Justice.
No trip to Brussels is complete without a picture of Manneken Pis.
The statue is only about 2 1/2 feet tall.
Brussels is filled with interesting (and amusing) cartoon murals on the sides
of buildings. They are a delight to stumble across.
Lastly, the bizarre atomium, a 300 ft. replica of an iron atom built
for the 1958 World's Fair.
