Trip to Belgium - November 2002

Around Thanksgiving, Michelle and I visited Belgium. Why Belgium, you ask? Why not? We spent most of our time in Brussels with a day trip to Bruges. Don't want to read my notes? Skip straight to the pictures.

There are just a few words you need to know about Belgium:

We were there 4 days, which I see as an ideal length of time to be in the country. Some highlights and recommendations:

Pictures - Bruges

Bruge is the definition of quaint, as these pictures show:

Buildings on the Markt (36KB jpeg)

Historic buildings lining the Markt, the main square of Bruges

Canals of Bruges 1 (27KB jpeg)

Canals of Bruges 2 (45KB jpeg)

Shots along the canals of Bruges. They make a great walking tour. Boat tours are also available.

Pictures - Brussels

Brussels has its share of photo-worthy scenery as well, much of it centered around the Grand Place, or old town square.

Buildings on Grand Place (41KB jpeg)

Sample of the ornate buildings lining Grand Place

Hotel de Ville - Grand Place (20KB jpeg)

The stunning Hotel de Ville. Not an actual functional hotel, but an old 15th century building. One of the few buildings in the area to survive the late 17th century French bombardment of the city. The Hotel Amigo is directly behind this building. This building is directly next to the ones in the previous photo on Grand Place.

Rue des Bouchers (32KB jpeg)

The touristy but scenic Rue des Bouchers, lined with restaurants preparing for the evening crowds.

Brussels Cityscape 1 (21KB jpeg)

Buildings lining a park, I believe the Place du Petit Sablon on the Rue de Regence.

Brussels Cityscape 2 (14KB jpeg)

Overlooking the city from a plaza near the national assembly building. The spire of the Hotel de Ville rises in the background. It made an excellent landmark for our hotel, I can tell you that.

Aaron and Michelle at the Bar (30KB jpeg)

Michelle and I sampling some beers at the famous bar at the Theatre Royal de Toone.

The Not So Smart Car (32KB jpeg)

Michelle standing next to the rolling death trap more commonly referred to in Europe as the "Smart" car.

One Very Studly Dude (15KB jpeg)

Me standing on an overlook next to the Palais de Justice.

Manneken Pis (9KB jpep)

No trip to Brussels is complete without a picture of Manneken Pis. The statue is only about 2 1/2 feet tall.

Cartoon Mural (26KB jpeg)

Brussels is filled with interesting (and amusing) cartoon murals on the sides of buildings. They are a delight to stumble across.

The Atomium (24KB jpeg)

Lastly, the bizarre atomium, a 300 ft. replica of an iron atom built for the 1958 World's Fair.
