Trip to Mexico - April 2004

Pictures - San Miguel

San Miguel is a quaint artists community in central Mexico. It's home to many American retirees and tourists. There are plenty of places to eat, drink, and spend your money on craft works. The prices for the craft pieces are actually lower in the villages where they are made, but San Miguel prices are still reasonable by US standards. Look for glass, leather, pewter, etc.

A closer look.

The streetscapes are nice, but can appear to be a bit plain from the outside - just brightly colored outside walls with plain wooden doors. Like this:

But inside there are often shockingly beautiful and ornate courtyards you never knew existed. In Mexico, you often find the beauty on the inside, not the outside, which is why many photos don't do the place justice. Here's a simple shot into the courtyard of our hotel. I wish I had a better sample.

Remember that bar from "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"? Yeah, I wish I hadn't seen that movie either. But it came in handy when I was in San Miguel, because that bar is there. Here's a shot of the liquor bottles behind the bar.

Here's me sitting in Johnny Depp's chair - smoking a Cuban and drinking Don Julio Real.

Oh, yeah, they have a church there, too.

Pictures - Teotihuacan

Perhaps the most impressive ancient ruins of the pre-Columbian western hemisphere are the pyramids at Teotihuacan, second in size only the great pyramids of Egypt.

Yes, you can climb to the top. And yes, they are steep.

I also visited a city called Queretaro (actually our home base of operations in Mexico) and parts of Mexico City. Alas, I neglected to take photos of those places. Maybe next time.
