Alerts

Just an early warning that the next round of service cuts happens April 26. I'll put the complete list up when/if I get it.

News and Rumors

If you think the northbound Howard L is running slower than normal between Fullerton and Diversey, you are right. The CTA has instituted a temporary slow zone there until a crumbling concrete foundation can be repaired.

Factoid

The State St. subway opened on October 17, 1943

Anecdotes

j.p. paulus (jp@nospam-paulus.com) reports that at am rush hour on 3/24 at Wilson L stop, the announcer says the northbound train that is currently at Belmont will be running express to Bryn Mawr. Later that day there were several false starts pulling out of Fullerton.

3/30 - Turnstile out of order at Clark/Lake.

3/31 - Waiting a Clark/Lake station. See Lake L parked at State/Lake. It sits there for several minutes before progressing. As it pulls into my station, I notice a set of doors with an "Out of Order" sticker. The doors open and people pour on. The train just stands there. Finally the doors close, then 30 seconds later reopen. This ritual is repeated until finally the motorman says "All aboard", closes the door and slowly pulls out. By the time the station platform is totally packed and there are _three_ Ravenswoods back to back to back.

4/2 - Fare card dispenser out of order at Fullerton

4/3 - Southbound Ravenswood at am rush. The train experiences a lengthy delay just north of the Merchandise Mart.

About the Weekly Breakdown

The Weekly Breakdown is small Internet journal devoted to the trials and tribulations of being a regular rider of the Chicago Transit Authority. While it is primarily devoted to my experiences, I am happy to hear about and include yours. Just send mail to breakdown@urbanophile.com.
