The Weekly Breakdown #28

Chronicling life riding the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)

Visit The Weekly Breakdown on the web at http://www.urbanophile.com/breakdown/

Since the Breakdown is a bit thin this week, it is a good time to remind everyone that this newsletter is cross-posted between chi.general and misc.transport.urban-transit. If you have any followups relevant to only one of the groups, please reply in that newsgroup only. Thanks.

Alerts

Adam H. Kerman (nospam-ahk@chinet.chinet.com) reports that the CTA will be switching the berths on the Loyala stop on the Howard L line today. Northbound trains will use the south berth and southbound trains will use the north berth.

Factoid

The CTA replaces 20,000 railroad ties per year.

Anecdotes

In an overdue for inclusion report from 7/17, Mike Pietrusinski (nospam-petro@interaccess.com) writes:

"And what was up with the Brown Line the other day?? When I got off at the Thompson Center, they announced that you would have to take a shuttle bus to Chicago and Franklin. Hmmmmm.........". [ Anybody remember what was up with this? - AMR ]

7/27 ~7:45am - My southbound Evanston Express train made numerous false starts and jerking stops between Chicago and Clark/Lake. I do mean numerous. Several people were thrown off balance and by the time the door finally opened at Clark/Lake, all standees where holding on for dear life.

7/29 7:30am - The Evanston Express train scheduled to arraive at Main St. is over five minutes late. By the time it arrives, there are only a handful of seats left (a rarity that far north). Fortunately I got one. Just south of Jarvis, the train did one of the CTA's trademark stop-for-no-reason stops, creating an even bigger delay. Of course out timing was so off that we ended up blocked at Clark Jct for quite a while too.

About the Weekly Breakdown

The Weekly Breakdown is a small Internet journal devoted to the trials and tribulations of being a regular rider of the Chicago Transit Authority. I would be happy to hear about and include your experiences. Just send mail to breakdown@urbanophile.com.
