Chicago Tribune columnist John McCarron wrote a piece this week advocating a new transitway that would link North Michigan Ave. with the commuter rail stations in the West Loop. After lambasting the city for the botched up job it did on the original Central Area Circulator project, McCarron advocates a simple busway using soon to be abandoned railroad ROW along the north bank of the Chicago River and along 16th St., as well as dedicates bus lanes on Clinton St. and in the Metra ROW along the lakefront. The RTA wants to spend $2.5 million on a pilot project that would install countdown signs at major transit stations indicating when the next train or bus would arrive. Also included would be signs indicating parking availability at stations, and messages related to transit on the variable message signs on freeways owned by IDOT. Cook County Board President John Stroger has filed suit seeking to have the law that sets the process for selecting RTA board members unconstitutional. He is upset that in the collar counties the county board presidents make the appointments, but he does not have that power for Cook County. [ Source: Chicago Tribune 1 March 2000 ]
No commentary this week because of time pressures. Hopefully you'll all survive. :-)
