It's good to be the king. Rep. Dennis Hastert used his clout as Speaker of the House to earmark hundreds of millions of dollars for Chicago area transit projects. The Blue Line rehab would get $320 million, the Brown Line $245 million, the Metra North Central double tracking $110 million, the Southwest Service expansion $103 million and the UP-West extension $54 million. The UP-West line actually passes through Hastert's district. This legislation has not yet made it into law so there are many opportunties left for this to be de-railed, as it were. It is a think week for me. I didn't ride much transit and you all didn't send me many goodies. But I did get not one, but two emails from people pointing out that the CTA is removing the "Washington" signs in the State St. at the L transfer and substituting the correct "Lake" signs. Thanks to Mike Harris and Bryan Berg.
