New York magazine’s crazy article on Vice Media and its cofounder Shane Smith got me thinking about the power of hype. Here’s a guy who clearly did some shady things, but who managed to, as the article made clear, build a company on a bluff. In a more ethical way, Steve Jobs did something similar. He created a reality bubble around Apple with hype than then conjured into being the real thing. Is there a lesson to be learned for this in revitalizing cities? Do some places just need a better hype man (and ethical one of course)? I explore this in my new podcast. If the audio player doesn’t display for you, click over to listen on Soundcloud.
